# Renting a car at Málaga Airport: the complete 2026 guide
Málaga Airport (AGP) is the gateway to the Costa del Sol, and for most international travellers a rental car is the smartest way to explore the region. From Marbella to Nerja, Ronda to Caminito del Rey, the best places sit outside the city — and public transport between them is slow.
This guide covers everything you need to know before you book, so you arrive prepared and avoid the most common surprises.
Where to pick up your car at Málaga Airport
Most rental companies operate from one of two zones:
- On-site desks inside Terminal 3 (Arrivals level). Faster after a long flight but typically more expensive.
- Off-site offices reached by free shuttle bus (5–10 minutes). Usually cheaper but adds 20–30 minutes to your journey.
Documents you must bring
To pick up your rental car you'll need:
- Valid driving licence held for at least 1 year. EU, UK, US and most international licences are accepted.
- Passport or national ID.
- Credit card in the name of the main driver, for the security deposit pre-authorisation.
Insurance: what's actually included
Cheap rental headlines almost always exclude proper insurance. Always check what's included before signing:
- Third-party liability — mandatory by Spanish law, always included.
- Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) — covers damage to the car. Usually included but with an excess of €600–€2,000.
- Theft protection — covers vehicle theft. Often included but with an excess.
- Tyre / windscreen / underbody — frequently *not* included in basic rates.
1. Excess reduction add-on offered by the rental company at pickup (€8–€15/day).
2. Standalone excess insurance from a third party (typically €5/day, much cheaper).
3. Premium credit cards that include rental car coverage.
At RealDrive, all our rates include comprehensive insurance with a reasonable excess, and we never push add-ons at pickup.
Hidden fees to watch for
These are the extras that turn a "€20/day" headline into a €60/day reality:
- Airport surcharge — some companies add 15–25% just because you pick up at the airport.
- Young driver fee — extra charge for drivers under 25 (sometimes under 30 for premium cars).
- Additional driver — €5–€10/day per extra driver.
- One-way fee — when you return the car in a different city.
- Fuel policy "full-empty" — you prepay a full tank at premium price and return it empty. Always choose "full-full" if possible.
- Tolls — the AP-7 motorway between Málaga and Estepona has toll sections.
When to book
The Costa del Sol fills up fast in summer. Our recommended timing:
- June–September: book at least 6–8 weeks in advance, especially for SUVs and 7-seaters.
- October–May: 2–3 weeks is usually enough.
- Christmas and Easter: book early — these are peak weeks too.
What car to choose
A few practical pointers based on your trip:
- Couple, 5–7 days, staying in Málaga or Marbella: an economy compact (Toyota Yaris, Seat Ibiza) is perfect. Easy to park, low fuel.
- Family with kids and luggage: mid-size SUV (Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga). More boot space, higher driving position.
- Group of 6+: 7-seater MPV or family van (Mercedes Vito).
- Driving up to Ronda or Granada: any car works, but petrol-engine recommended for the mountain stretches.
- Mostly city + beach: automatic is much more comfortable in Málaga's traffic.
Driving tips for the Costa del Sol
Once you have the keys, a few things that catch first-time visitors out:
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on regional roads, 120 km/h on motorways. Strictly enforced.
- Roundabouts: the car *inside* the roundabout has priority — not the entering car.
- Parking: blue lines = paid (buy a ticket from the machine), yellow lines = no parking, white = free. Underground car parks are €15–€25/day in tourist areas.
- Fuel: petrol is around €1.55/L, diesel €1.45/L in 2026. Repsol, Cepsa and BP are the most common chains.
- Emergency: 112 works from any phone, even without SIM.
Returning the car
To avoid disputes at drop-off:
- Refuel at a petrol station near the airport (Repsol on the A-7 access road is convenient).
- Take photos of the car (especially close-ups of bumpers, wheels and dashboard) before returning.
- Ask for the return receipt with the agreed fuel level and any damage notes.
- Allow 30–45 minutes between drop-off and your flight check-in.
